Today I taught this to the middle schoolers at our church. I thought it was fitting to put on here as well. We all need reminders that we are not who others say we are but who God, the very being that wove who we are together. He knew we are and who we would be.
What is Identity? The fact of being who you are.
Who tells you who you are? Family, friends, co-workers, other students, the world. Everybody will tell you who they think you are…right. That doesn’t make any of it true. You are who God tells you that you are.
In Genesis 1:27 ~ “So God created mankind in his own image.” If we are created in his image then doesn’t God know exactly who we are. He made our identity.
Jeremiah 1:5 ~“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” He knew us before anyone else. Before our family, friends, neighbors, social media, bullies. ANYONE knew who we were. He made us who we were to be so doesn’t that mean that He should be the one to tell us who we are not those who do not know us and certainly not those who don’t love us.
When someone speaks out a word about you good or bad that doesn’t mean that is who you are. Someone will always be speaking about you, but you have to learn that unless they have been led to tell you a word about you coming from the Lord himself then it holds no meaning. That is not for you to pick up and hang onto. You lay it down at the feet of Jesus through prayer and ask him to tell you who you are. Who He tells you you are is what matters. Even lies you tell yourself about who you are (or that Satan tries to tell you in your own mind) are not the truth.
Satan will try to tell you lies about who you are. He will never stop trying to tell you those lies. Do you know that when Jesus was in the wilderness Satan even tried to tell Jesus lies?
So, who does God say that I am?
He says that I am a daughter of the KING and I am not swayed by this world. For My God is with me and goes before me. I do NOT fear because I am HIS!
He tells me I am Bold.
Who does God say we are?
We are disciples of Christ.
We are loved.
We are forgiven.
We are chosen.
We are a friend of Jesus.
This week pray and ask God who he says you are then reflect on that. I am sure he will tell you things that you didn’t even know you were.
